How To Get a GPS Update

Having a GPS unit in your automobile is extremely helpful — no yelling at Siri, no pulling over to scan for an address. Simply say where you need to go and bam, you’re en route. Your Garmin device needs a present rundown of all mapped streets and parkways in order to work properly. We’ve all been in a situation where your GPS begins bringing you down a dim street that turns and turns until the point where you reach a dead end. Very frustrating!

Streets and routes change continuously.  It is important that you keep your GPS current so that it will take you exactly where you need to go. Luckily, keeping your GPS device refreshed is simple, particularly with Garmin’s Express programming, which basically connects to your PC. This will enhance your entire experience. You can utilize Express whether you have a Drive, DriveAssist, Zumo, Nuvi, or some other model in Garmin’s lineup. Here’s a simple, well organized guide to the most proficient methods to refresh a Garmin GPS.

Step 1: Connect Your GPS to Your PC

Before starting the update, you’ll need to connect your Garmin GPS  to a PC. To do this, remove it from your auto, truck, or cruiser and ensure the GPs is turned on. Using a smaller than expected USB link, snare the GPS to your workstation and pause while the advance bar scrolls. If you’ve associated your GPS previously, prompts should start automatically. If it’s your first time, you may need to physically sign in to your Garmin account before beginning.

Step 2: Install Garmin Express

Next, you’ll have to ensure Garmin Express is installed on your PC by visiting the Garmin Express download page and choosing either “Download for Windows” or “Download for Mac.” Once the software downloads, follow the online prompts to install. As stated above, Garmin Express works with all GPS units including Drive, DriveSafe, Nuvi, and Zumo.

Step 3: Access or Buy Updates

Please be sure to download your updates when they are available. There may be a chance that Garmin Express may not be completely installed on your PC. Be sure to click on the Program and double check that it is working properly. Click “Include a Device” and find your GPS. The application will look for any accessible updates and offer you a rundown. Click “Select All” and keep your GPS connected while your device is updating. Once completed, you’ll have all accessible applications that are either free or came standard with your gadget. If you didn’t buy lifetime updates, you may need to buy them now.

Step 4: Disconnect Your Gadget

When you’ve finished the free updates (or obtained new), select “Launch” to securely disengage your GPS and unplug the USB link. Once unplugged, install your GPS back into your vehicle and rest assured your headings will (ideally) be exact.
